The refurbished Centre opened on 16 February 2023, more than five years after it closed to the public for earthquake strengthening.

More than 2000 local, national and international artists have performed on the stages since the centre re-opened, providing 396 hours of entertainment to 35,149 attendees through ticketed and free events.

Sir Howard Morrison’s daughter, Donna Morrison, says the Centre is something everyone can be proud of with quality products, resources and people.

“We extend our thanks for your patronage this past year.

“We have witnessed, with a lot of pride, the quality array of presentations at the Centre. From local to international to the weird and wonderful – every performance showcases the talent that has risen since re-opening.”

The re-designed performing arts centre includes the Sir Owen Glenn Theatre which is the largest theatre in the Bay of Plenty region, seating more than 960. It also includes a flexible black box theatre seating up to 300 people, a cafe and bar area and multi-purpose studios for workshops, rehearsals and recording.

Performing Arts Director, Janelle Bish says having this offering for locals and our region is really important.

“The Centre is once again showcasing local talent and will have the ability to attract larger scale touring shows that previously bypassed Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty.

“We’re proud of this regionally significant, fit-for-purpose performing arts facility that has upheld its commitment to artistic innovation and inclusivity. From showcasing emerging talents to hosting international acts, the Centre has served as a platform for diverse voices and perspectives – we look forward to what 2024 has in store.”
