Our Spaces \ Sir Owen Glenn Theatre

The Sir Owen Glenn Theatre is an outstanding regional theatre offering modern tiered seating, high quality lighting and audio technology and adjustable stage to highlight a wide range of performances.

The redevelopment has reinstated the Civic Theatre with 950+ seats. Theatre services, acoustics and HVAC have been upgraded to the level expected of a contemporary theatre.

A small-scale orchestra pit has been designed to accommodate showbands and small orchestras to accompany stage performances. The pit can be raised to floor level to provide additional seating when an orchestra is not needed, or can be raised up to stage level to create a thrust.

An enduring friendship is behind the choice of name for the theatre inside the Sir Howard Morrison Centre. Entitled Matangi Rau, the Sir Owen Glenn Theatre reflects the bond between Sir Owen Glenn and Sir Howard Morrison. Matangi Rau is reference to the Te Arawa whakataukī (proverb) alluding to local winds and the environment. Within the theatre, Te Hau (main stage) captures the ‘aura’ of Tā Hauata, and Te Ata (the audience) is the reflection of greatness seen emanating from the audience.
