Fright Fest Rotorua: The Ultimate Halloween Experience

From spooky theatre tours to interactive movie nights and a glow-in-the-dark disco, there’s something for everyone to enjoy—or fear.

This Halloween, the Sir Howard Morrison Centre presents Fright Fest, a festival packed with thrilling events for all ages. From spooky theatre tours to interactive movie nights and a glow-in-the-dark disco, there’s something for everyone to enjoy—or fear.

Sir Howard Morrison Centre Performing Arts Director, Janelle Bish, is is eager to welcome the Rotorua community for a weekend of exciting and safe Halloween entertainment.

“Following the runaway success of last year’s Halloween, Fright Fest is the exciting evolution a full team collaboration that brings together a fun weekend of live performing arts experiences for all ages,” says Janelle Bish.

On Friday 25 October, step into the quirky, ghostly world of Tim Burton’s 1988 movie Beetlejuice in an interactive film screening like no other.

Enjoy a cabaret-style setup in Te Whakaruruhau | Banquet Room, complete with prop kits and a chance to dress up as your favorite character from the film.

It's a whimsical, PG-rated night of fun for fans of all ages.

Later that night, for those 18 and over, things take a darker turn with the original cult-favourite Scream - Wanna Play a Game? Experience the 1996 slasher-horror classic in an immersive film screening.

Seated in cabaret-style, guests are encouraged to don Ghostface or other horror-themed cosplay, sip on themed cocktails, and enjoy an antipasto platter while participating in the "Wanna Play a Game?" quiz that will test their survival skills in the chance to win spot prizes.  

Experience the ultimate Halloween thrill with Nightmare at the Theatre - R14 Edition on 26 and 27 October.

This adults-only event promises a chilling journey through the eerie corridors of the Sir Howard Morrison Centre, where terrifying characters and unsettling surprises await.

“We’re excited to commission a brand new work from the creators of the popular Night at the Museum series. Wildside Promotions who, together with Sir Howard Morrison Centre’s Technical team will create a bespoke horror-tour experience through the Sir Howard Morrison Centre.  It’s a chance to see the centre as you’ve never seen it before, if you dare!” Says Janelle Bish.

Sessions start from 6:30pm, with each 15-20 minute theatre tour providing an intense and immersive experience. Tour groups are limited to 6 people, ensuring a more personal encounter with the horror.

For families, the Nightmare at the Theatre: Family Edition offers a spooky yet suitable adventure for kids aged 8 and up, with sessions starting at 3:30pm.

Explore the eerie hallways, meet entertaining characters, and enjoy family-friendly surprises during these afternoon sessions. Parental supervision is essential to ensure an enjoyable and appropriately spooky experience for younger audiences.


The festival concludes with the Let’s Glo Disco, on Sunday 27 October, in a glow-in-the-dark dance party for tamariki up to 10 years old.

Tamariki are invited to join the spooky fun with lively hosts and music, while dressing up in their best costumes for a chance to win thrilling spot prizes. Glow sticks, tasty snacks, and Halloween treats will also be available for purchase.

The disco will be supervised by our ‘Glow Wardens,’ allowing parents to relax with a coffee while the kids dance the afternoon away safely.
